History Of Copper Piping

The purpose of this site is to help you learn how to sweat copper pipe, a major component of plumping repair. But first, a short history lesson:

Home builders began using copper pipes in the late fifties. Copper was preferred due to it's ease of use and durability. Big savings on installation and labor costs resulted from the use of copper piping.

Up until the late 70s, half tin and half lead solder was used to bond copper pipes. Modern solder is 95% tin and 5% lead. Though many modern homes implement PVC piping, copper is still considered a safe and inexpensive building material.

With a bit of practice, you can become skilled at sweating copper. When done right, sweating creates strong joints in copper piping.
